Results

A grade calculator helps students turn assignment scores, test results, course weights and credits into a transparent estimate of their current grade. This calculator includes four modes: weighted grades, points-based grades, the score needed on a final exam and a credit-weighted GPA.

The tool is designed for planning and checking arithmetic. It does not replace the official grade issued by a school, university, examination board or teacher. Policies on rounding, resits, dropped assessments, moderation, grade boundaries, minimum component marks and extra credit may change the result even when the mathematical average is correct.

What this grade calculator can do

  • calculate a weighted course grade from assignments with different percentages;
  • calculate a grade from total points earned and total points available;
  • estimate the score required on a final examination to reach a target grade;

Weighted grade calculation

A weighted course gives different importance to different assessments. A final examination may count for 40%, coursework for 35% and laboratory work for 25%. The calculator first converts every item to a percentage:

Item percentage = score earned ÷ maximum score × 100.

It then multiplies each percentage by its weight:

Weighted contribution = item percentage × item weight.

The normalised weighted result is:

Final percentage = sum of weighted contributions ÷ total included weight.

Example. A student receives 72/80 on an essay worth 25%, 41/50 on a test worth 35% and 88/100 on a project worth 40%. The item percentages are 90%, 82% and 88%. The final result is 90 × 0.25 + 82 × 0.35 + 88 × 0.40 = 86.4%.

When weights do not add up to 100%

Weights may total less than 100% because some assessments have not yet been completed. They may also change after a teacher drops an assessment. The calculator offers two interpretations.

With normalisation enabled, the included weights are rescaled to represent the work completed so far. If completed work has a total weight of 60%, the weighted sum is divided by 60 rather than 100. This answers: “What is my average on the assessments currently included?”

Without normalisation, missing weight effectively contributes zero. This answers: “How much of the entire course grade have I already earned?” Both results can be valid, but they answer different questions.

Dropping the lowest result

The calculator identifies the lowest assessment by percentage rather than raw points. This matters because 18/20 is stronger than 70/100 even though 18 is the smaller raw number.

Before using this option, confirm the course rule. Some modules drop the lowest quiz automatically, while others exclude only certain categories or require every assessment to be attempted. A zero caused by absence may also be treated differently from a completed low score.

Extra credit and scores above 100%

The calculator allows a score higher than the maximum, which can represent bonus points. For example, 54 points from an assessment listed as 50 possible points equals 108%.

Extra credit policies vary. Some teachers cap an individual item at 100%, add bonus points after the weighted average or restrict the maximum course grade. Enter the score in the way the official gradebook applies it.

Points-based grade calculation

A points-based course does not need separate weights when each assessment’s maximum points already express its importance. The formula is:

Course percentage = total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100.

Example. A student earns 42/50, 78/100, 24/25 and 135/150. Total earned points are 279 and total possible points are 325. The course percentage is 279 ÷ 325 × 100 = 85.85%.

A common error is averaging the assessment percentages equally. In the example, a 25-point quiz should not influence the result as much as a 150-point project unless the course rules explicitly say otherwise.

Required final exam grade

The final-exam mode estimates what is needed to reach a target overall percentage. It uses:

Required final percentage = (target grade − current grade × coursework share) ÷ final-exam share.

Coursework share and final-exam share must together equal 100%. The calculator also converts the required percentage into raw exam points.

Example. A current coursework grade of 74% counts for 70% of the course. The final examination counts for 30%, and the target overall grade is 78%. The required exam result is (78 − 74 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 87.33%. On a 120-point exam, that is about 104.8 points.

Possible and impossible targets

If the required exam score is above 100%, the target is mathematically impossible under the entered assumptions unless extra credit is available. If the required score is below 0%, the target has already been secured even with zero on the final.

The calculator also shows the maximum and minimum possible course results. These values are useful when deciding whether to change a target or focus on another assessment.

GPA calculation with credits

A GPA is usually credit weighted. A large course should influence the average more than a small course:

GPA = sum of course credits × grade points ÷ total credits.

Example. A 10-credit course graded at 4.0, a 5-credit course graded at 3.0 and a 5-credit course graded at 2.0 produce 40 + 15 + 10 = 65 quality points. Dividing by 20 credits gives a GPA of 3.25.

The calculator uses the grade-point values stored in the selected scale. Because GPA conventions differ internationally and between institutions, the scale editor is essential when an official transcript uses another mapping.

Why percentage-to-GPA conversion is approximate

A percentage and a GPA are not interchangeable measurements. A university may assign grade points from final letter grades rather than convert every percentage directly. Courses may use pass/fail treatment, repeated-course rules, honours weighting or excluded modules.

The estimated average percentage shown in GPA mode is therefore descriptive, not an official reverse conversion. Use the transcript rules for applications, scholarships and academic standing.

Editing the grading scale

The scale editor lets users change:

  • grade labels such as A, B, 1.7, 14/20 or 12;
  • the minimum percentage for each band;
  • the grade-point value used in GPA calculations;
  • the number of bands.

Arrange thresholds from highest to lowest and include a final band beginning at 0%. Save a copy of the official scale or export the result so the assumptions remain auditable.

Understanding grading in England

There is no single percentage-to-letter conversion for all English education. Ofqual confirms that GCSEs in England use grades 9 to 1, with 9 as the highest grade. This replaced the former A* to G scale. A levels continue to use A* to E, with U for an unclassified result.

Grade boundaries can be set by awarding organisations and can differ by subject and examination series. Therefore, a generic A*–U percentage preset should be edited when calculating a regulated qualification. The official results and published grade boundaries take priority.

Regional presets for international users

The calculator includes editable starting scales for the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden, Ukraine, South Korea, Japan, Norway, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Denmark and Türkiye. These presets make the interface convenient, but they do not claim that every institution in a country uses one identical conversion.

For example, German universities commonly use a scale where 1.0 is the best result and 4.0 is the minimum passing grade, while 5.0 represents failure. Individual examination regulations determine intermediate grades and calculations. DAAD programme information reflects this common structure but also notes that universities handle conversions.

French national examinations are commonly marked on a 0–20 scale. Official baccalauréat guidance explains the use of coefficients and continuous assessment, while official information lists honours bands based on the final average. The exact assessment structure must still be taken from the current programme rules.

Rounding and decimal precision

Do not round each item before completing the full calculation unless the published policy requires it. Early rounding can shift a borderline result. A safer workflow is to keep several decimal places internally and round only the displayed final result.

Institutions may round 69.5 to 70, truncate decimals, apply compensation rules or use unrounded marks for classification. The calculator reports mathematical values; the official policy decides the awarded grade.

Common mistakes

  • entering a raw score in a percentage field;
  • using 20 instead of 0.20 in a formula outside the calculator;
  • averaging percentages equally in a points-based course;
  • normalising weights when unfinished work should count as zero;
  • dropping a result that the course does not permit dropping;
  • using a national preset instead of the course’s published boundaries;
  • converting percentage to GPA with an unofficial table;
  • forgetting that repeated or pass/fail courses may be treated differently;
  • rounding intermediate results too early.

How to verify the result

Compare every row with the official gradebook. Check the maximum score, category weight, dropped-assessment rule and whether the displayed current average is normalised. Recalculate one or two rows manually.

For high-stakes decisions, such as progression, graduation, scholarship eligibility or university admission, ask the relevant academic office to confirm the calculation. Keep a copy of the syllabus and any published grade-boundary document.

Frequently asked questions

Should weights always total 100%?

They should total 100% for the complete course, but completed assessments may total less. Normalisation changes how the current result is interpreted.

Can the calculator drop my lowest quiz?

Yes, but only use this feature when the official course policy allows it.

Can a grade be above 100%?

Mathematically yes when extra credit exists, but the institution may cap the recorded grade.

Is GPA calculated from percentages?

Not always. Many institutions assign grade points from final course grades, so use the official conversion.

Why does my school portal show a different result?

It may use category rules, hidden assignments, special rounding, resits, moderation or exclusions not entered in the calculator.

Are the country presets official?

No. They are editable planning presets. Official programme or examination rules always take priority.
