Results
An ECTS grade calculator can combine assessment weights, calculate a credit-weighted semester average, estimate a required score and explain how a local grade sits within an institutional or historical distribution.
ECTS is primarily a credit transfer and accumulation system, not a universal European grading scale. The European Commission describes it as a learner-centred framework that supports transparent programme design, workload, assessment and recognition. A full-time academic year normally corresponds to 60 ECTS credits, while the actual grade attached to a course remains part of the institution’s own grading practice.
What the calculator can do
- calculate a weighted course grade from exams, projects and assignments;
- separate a current grade from a projected final grade;
- ignore incomplete assessments or count them as zero;
- normalise entered weights or require exactly 100%;
- drop selected low completed results when a syllabus allows it;
- calculate a semester average weighted by ECTS credits;
- track attempted, earned and failed credits;
- convert configurable local scales into a normalised percentage;

What ECTS credits measure
ECTS credits represent the workload needed to achieve learning outcomes. The ECTS Users’ Guide assigns 60 credits to a full-time academic year, commonly 1,500 to 1,800 hours or about 25 to 30 hours per credit.
That workload can include lectures, seminars, projects, practical work, placements and independent study. Institutions award credits after students complete the required activities and demonstrate the learning outcomes.
A six-credit course therefore carries more workload than a three-credit course, but it does not automatically deserve a better grade. Credits and grades answer different questions:
- credits describe the workload and accumulation of learning;
- grades describe assessed performance according to local rules.
Weighted course grade formula
When a course contains several assessments, convert every result to a percentage and multiply it by its weight:
Weighted grade = Σ(assessment percentage × assessment weight) ÷ Σ(weights used).
Distinguish contribution from current grade. A contribution of 37.6 points means completed work has added 37.6 points toward the final result, while performance across that completed work equals 75.2%.
Current grade versus projected grade
“Ignore incomplete” averages only scored work. “Count incomplete as zero” shows the result if unfinished work remains at zero.
Neither option predicts future performance. A syllabus may apply different rules to missed exams, extensions or resits.
Normalising weights and requiring 100%
Normalisation rescales the entered weights and is useful for progress tracking. A final-grade audit should use the exact syllabus weights, while the “require exactly 100%” setting catches missing or duplicated components. Extra-credit treatment depends on the course policy.
Dropping the lowest result
The calculator can remove one or more lowest completed percentages before calculating the weighted result. Activate this feature only when the course policy permits it.
Dropping a result can also change the effective total weight. Check whether the institution redistributes the removed weight, substitutes another assessment or simply excludes the component. The calculator’s normalisation option redistributes the remaining entered weights mathematically.
Semester average weighted by ECTS credits
A credit-weighted semester average gives larger courses more influence:
Credit-weighted average = Σ(course grade × course credits) ÷ Σ(attempted credits).
Universities may calculate official averages differently because of rounding, excluded courses, compensation, pass/fail modules, repeated attempts or dissertation rules.
Attempted, earned and failed credits
Attempted credits include all entered courses. Earned credits include only courses marked as passed under the selected ECTS letter or configured threshold. Failed credits remain attempted but not earned.
The ECTS Users’ Guide links awarding credits to the successful achievement of learning outcomes. A low numerical grade does not automatically remove credits unless the institution treats it as a failure.
Why ECTS does not define one universal GPA
ECTS credits do not establish a single European GPA formula. Institutions retain national or local grading systems. The calculator’s optional grade-point convention—A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 and FX/F=0—is therefore labelled as an estimate.
Use it only for comparison inside the calculator. Do not present it as an official GPA, degree classification or admissions result unless the institution publishes the same method.
Modern ECTS grade conversion uses distributions
The ECTS Users’ Guide asks institutions to provide their grading scale together with a statistical table of passing grades, showing its actual use in a programme or field.
The guide introduced grade distribution tables as a replacement for the older ECTS A–E grading scale. Fair conversion compares the position of a grade in the sending institution’s distribution with a parallel reference group at the receiving institution.
An Erasmus+ case study on EGRACONS applies the same principle: institutions upload their own tables, and a student’s percentage rank helps identify a comparable grade.
Institutional threshold mode
Many course calculators still need a simple rule for internal planning. The calculator therefore includes editable percentage thresholds. A sample configuration may be A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60%, E from 50%, FX from 40% and F below 40%.
These are examples, not official ECTS boundaries. Change every threshold to match the course or university policy. Some institutions do not use ECTS letters at all for regular grading.
Historical A–E distribution mode
The legacy relative model assigned A to the top 10% of passing students, B to the next 25%, C to the next 30%, D to the next 25% and E to the final 10%. FX and F represented unsuccessful performance under institutional definitions.

The calculator keeps this model for educational and legacy comparisons. Do not describe it as the current universal method: the 2015 guide states that the previous A–E scale is no longer used.
Rank, percentile and tied scores
In cohort mode, all local grades are first normalised so that higher percentages represent better performance, including scales such as Germany where a lower local number is better.
The calculator uses average rank for tied values. The calculator estimates percentile from the results below the student plus half of the tied group:
Percentile = (scores below + 0.5 × tied scores) ÷ cohort size × 100.
Small cohorts can produce unstable boundaries. The ECTS Users’ Guide recommends reliable reference groups and several years of passing grades for official tables.
Converting a local scale
The calculator includes editable presets for several national scales because grading practice can vary by institution and programme.
The conversion maps the local passing mark to the configured E boundary, the best local result toward 100%, and failed scores below the passing boundary.
Handling a lower-is-better scale
German programmes commonly use scales where 1.0 is excellent and 4.0 is the final passing grade, although rules vary. The calculator reverses the direction before normalisation.
Required grade planner
The planner calculates the average needed on all remaining weighted work:
Required remaining average = (target final grade − current contribution) ÷ remaining weight.
A result above 100% is impossible without permitted extra credit. The current contribution may already secure the target, although separate attendance or final-exam requirements can still apply.
How to verify a result
- Copy assessment weights from the current syllabus.
- Check whether scores are raw points or percentages.
- Confirm the official pass mark and rounding rule.
- Identify resit, compensation and dropped-assessment policies.
- For mobility recognition, request the sending and receiving institutions’ grade distribution tables.
- Compare the result with the Transcript of Records and programme regulations.
The Diploma Supplement describes completed studies for transparency, while the competent institution decides official recognition.
Common mistakes
- treating ECTS credits as grade points;
- using the old A–E percentile model as a current universal rule;
- assuming every university in one country uses the same scale;
- mixing raw points and percentages;
- forgetting that completed weights may not total 100% yet;
- counting failed credits as earned;
- presenting the calculator’s A=5 convention as an official GPA;
- ignoring ties and small cohort size in percentile calculations;
- rounding intermediate values too early;
- using a personal estimate for an official recognition decision.
