A wallpaper calculator estimates how many rolls, strips, packs and adhesive packs a room needs while accounting for wall dimensions, roll size, pattern repeat, match type, trimming, openings and reserve material.

Wallpaper rarely behaves like a simple square-metre product. Installers cut full-height drops, and a pattern may force each drop to start at a specific point in the repeat. Two rooms with the same wall area can therefore need different roll counts.

Use the product label. Enter the actual roll width, roll length, pattern repeat and match type supplied by the manufacturer. Standard presets help with planning, but wallpaper products vary.

Measure every wall accurately

The Wallcoverings Association describes accurate measurement as the most important step in estimating wallcovering and recommends a rigid or steel tape rather than a cloth tape. Measure each wall from corner to corner and from the finished floor line to the ceiling or upper termination point.

Older rooms can have small height differences. Record each wall separately so an average value does not produce a short drop. Identical walls can share one entry with a higher quantity.

For a rectangular room, the combined wall width equals the perimeter:

Room perimeter = 2 × room length + 2 × room width.

However, separate wall entries work better for sloping ceilings, chimney breasts, alcoves, stairwells and feature walls.

Calculate the number of wallpaper drops

Wallpaper installation uses vertical strips, often called drops or lengths. The first quantity comes from the wall width:

Required drops = ceiling(wall width ÷ roll width).

Example. A wall measures 4.00 m wide and the roll measures 0.53 m wide. The calculation gives 4.00 ÷ 0.53 = 7.55, so the wall needs 8 full-width drops.

Always round up because a fraction still requires another strip. Corners may change how an installer splits the final drop.

Add trimming allowance to the wall height

Installers normally cut each drop slightly longer than the measured wall height. The extra material allows for uneven ceilings, skirting lines and final trimming.

Raw drop length = wall height + top allowance + bottom allowance.

A.S. Création advises adding about 5 cm to the room height as a basic allowance. The correct amount depends on wall condition, ceiling level, installation method and installer preference.

Example. A 2.50 m wall with 5 cm at the top and 5 cm at the bottom needs a raw drop of 2.60 m.

Understand pattern repeat and match type

The pattern repeat is the vertical distance before the design starts again. Manufacturers normally print it on the roll label or product page. Boråstapeter, for example, asks users for wall dimensions, roll dimensions, pattern size and match type in its own wallpaper calculator.

For a straight match, the calculator rounds the raw drop length upward:

Adjusted drop length = ceiling(raw drop length ÷ repeat) × repeat.

Example. A raw drop of 2.60 m with a 64 cm repeat becomes 3.20 m because 2.60 m requires five complete repeats.

How half-drop and third-drop matching change the cut

A half-drop design shifts every second strip by half the repeat. A third-drop design cycles through three positions. A simple area calculation cannot describe this sequence properly.

The calculator assigns an offset to each strip, rounds it to the next valid pattern position and places the cuts into rolls. This shows alternating lengths instead of adding one vague waste percentage.

Work out how many drops fit in one roll

For equal straight-match drops, the familiar formula is:

Drops per roll = floor(roll length ÷ adjusted drop length).

Example. A 10.05 m roll divided by a 2.60 m free-match drop yields 3 complete drops. The remaining 2.25 m cannot provide a fourth full-height drop.

Different wall heights create different cuts. The cutting plan sorts longer pieces first and places each one into the smallest suitable roll remainder. An installer may alter that layout to position a motif at a visible edge.

Why area-only formulas can underestimate patterned wallpaper

A standard European roll measuring 0.53 × 10.05 m contains about 5.33 m² of material. Dividing wall area by 5.33 may look reasonable, but it ignores full-height strips, trimming and repeat waste.

Area-only mode converts known wall area into an equivalent width and then performs the same strip calculation.

Should doors and windows be deducted?

An opening does not always save a complete drop. Paper above a door, below a window or around a reveal still consumes material. Large openings may save several strips, while small openings often provide useful reserve for matching, repairs and mistakes.

The calculator offers no deduction, partial deduction or full deduction. It converts the credited area into an estimated number of complete drops instead of subtracting area blindly. Ask the supplier or installer to confirm unusual openings.

Add waste and reserve rolls separately

Pattern matching already creates cutting waste. The extra-waste field covers installation damage, awkward corners, miscuts and local repairs. The reserve-roll field then adds complete unopened rolls for future maintenance.

A.S. Création states that a calculated requirement remains approximate and recommends planning an additional reserve roll for later repairs or renovation. Keeping a spare roll from the same production batch can help when a damaged section needs replacement.

Calculate rolls sold in packs

Suppliers may sell single rolls, double rolls or multi-roll packs. Use the physical quantity shown in the offer.

Packs required = ceiling(total rolls ÷ rolls per pack).

The number of rolls purchased can exceed the calculated need because the supplier sells only complete packs. The calculator displays both the required quantity and the purchased quantity, which makes leftover material easier to understand.

Estimate wallpaper and paste cost

The wallpaper cost uses either the price per individual roll or the price per pack. Tax or a supplier surcharge can then apply to the material subtotal.

Wallpaper cost = purchased rolls × price per roll, or:

Wallpaper cost = required packs × price per pack.

For paste, enter the coverage printed on the adhesive package rather than a generic value. Product type, wall absorbency and application method affect consumption.

Paste packs = ceiling(net wall area × paste allowance ÷ coverage per pack).

Calculate wallpaper panels and murals

Murals and pre-cut panels use wall size, panel size, overlap and outer trim rather than roll logic.

Effective panel width = panel width − overlap.

The first panel covers its full width; every following panel adds only the effective width. If the required height exceeds the panel height, the calculator adds rows and warns that the selected product may not suit a seamless mural layout.

Practical example for a patterned feature wall

Consider a wall 4.00 m wide and 2.50 m high. Its roll measures 0.53 × 10.05 m, the repeat equals 64 cm, the match is straight and the total trim allowance equals 10 cm.

  1. Width requires 8 drops because 4.00 ÷ 0.53 rounds up.
  2. Adding trim produces a raw drop of 2.60 m.
  3. Rounding to the repeat increases the cut to 3.20 m.
  4. One roll supplies 3 drops because 10.05 ÷ 3.20 equals 3 complete cuts.
  5. Eight drops require 3 rolls before extra waste or reserve.

A free-match product also needs 3 rolls in this example but leaves different offcuts. Larger projects can show a greater repeat penalty.

Common estimating mistakes

  • using floor area instead of wall area;
  • assuming every wall has the same height;
  • dividing only by square metres per roll;
  • ignoring the pattern repeat or match symbol;
  • forgetting trimming allowance;
  • deducting every window and door in full;
  • confusing a single roll with a double-roll package;
  • mixing roll widths or production batches;
  • ordering no reserve for future repair;
  • using a generic paste coverage instead of the product label.

How to verify the estimate before ordering
