A parquet calculator estimates how much flooring must be purchased for a room or a group of connected areas. It converts room measurements into net floor area, adds installation waste and optional spare stock, then rounds the result to complete packs.

This calculator can work from a known total area or from several rectangular, circular and triangular sections. It can also estimate planks, underlay rolls, skirting pieces and project cost when the relevant product information is available.

The calculated quantity is a purchasing estimate, not an installation specification. Always check the flooring manufacturer’s pack coverage, installation instructions, approved underlay or adhesive, moisture limits, expansion-gap requirements and batch advice before ordering.

What the Parquet Calculator calculates

The calculator can report:

  • net floor area after additions and subtractions;
  • installation-waste area;
  • separate spare-stock area;
  • total area that must be covered;
  • whole packs required;
  • planks required and planks purchased;
  • actual coverage purchased;
  • surplus created by pack rounding;
  • flooring, underlay and skirting cost;
  • estimated total cost and cost per net area.

All internal area calculations are converted through square metres, while the user can enter or display metric and imperial units.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose whether to enter a known total area or build the room from sections.
  2. Select the measurement unit used on the site.
  3. Add every floor section that will receive parquet.
  4. Subtract columns, hearths or other areas that will remain uncovered.
  5. Enter the manufacturer’s pack coverage, or enter plank dimensions and pieces per pack.
  6. Select the laying pattern and review the waste percentage.
  7. Add a separate reserve percentage when spare material is wanted.
  8. Select a price method if a cost estimate is needed.
  9. Optionally enter underlay and skirting information.
  10. Calculate, then compare the result with the product documentation and installation plan.

Measuring a simple rectangular room

For a rectangular room:

Area = length × width

Example. A room measuring 5.20 m by 4.10 m has an area of 21.32 m².

Measure at floor level. Walls are not always parallel or square, so measure more than once when the room is old, irregular or visibly tapered.

Measuring an irregular room

An L-shaped or multi-part room is easier to calculate when it is divided into simple sections. Add the area of every section:

Net added area = section 1 + section 2 + section 3 + …

Example. A main rectangle of 21.32 m² and an adjoining rectangle of 2.16 m² produce 23.48 m² before deductions.

Do not estimate the outline as one large rectangle unless the empty parts are subtracted accurately.

Subtracting uncovered areas

The calculator can subtract areas occupied by fixed features that will not receive flooring.

Net floor area = added areas − excluded areas

Example. Subtracting a 0.60 m × 0.40 m hearth from 23.48 m² gives 23.24 m² of net floor area.

Subtract only areas that are genuinely excluded from the installation. Flooring may still be required under removable furniture, appliances or future cabinetry, depending on the project plan and product system.

Rectangle, circle and triangle formulas

The room-section builder supports three common shapes:

  • Rectangle: area = length × width;
  • Circle: area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)2;
  • Triangle: area = base × height ÷ 2.

For a triangle, the height must be perpendicular to the base. A sloping side is not automatically the triangle’s height.

Metric and imperial units

Room dimensions can be entered in metres, centimetres, millimetres, feet, inches or yards. Area can be displayed in square metres, square feet or square yards.

Keep each set of dimensions in one unit. Do not enter a length in metres and a width in centimetres under the same selected unit.

The calculator converts the values internally, so changing the output area unit changes the display rather than the physical quantity.

Using the manufacturer’s pack coverage

The most direct product input is the printed coverage per pack. This value should come from the carton, product data sheet or retailer’s current product record.

Packs required = round up(required area ÷ coverage per pack)

Example. If 27.1908 m² must be covered and one pack covers 1.728 m², the mathematical result is about 15.74 packs. The purchase quantity is therefore 16 complete packs.

Do not round the required area down before dividing by pack coverage.

Calculating pack coverage from plank dimensions

When pack coverage is not available, it can be derived from plank dimensions:

Area of one plank = plank length × plank width

Pack coverage = area of one plank × pieces per pack

Example. A 600 mm × 120 mm plank covers 0.072 m². With 24 planks per pack, one pack covers 1.728 m².

Use the actual face dimensions and actual pieces per pack. Mixed-length packs or products sold by random coverage should be calculated from the manufacturer’s stated pack area instead.

Installation waste

Waste covers material lost through cutting, end trimming, pattern alignment, board selection, damaged pieces and unusable offcuts.

The calculator includes planning presets:

  • 5% for straight or parallel installation;
  • 10% for diagonal installation;
  • 12% for herringbone;
  • 15% for chevron;
  • a custom percentage for other conditions.
These percentages are planning starting points, not universal standards. Small rooms, many doorways, short walls, borders, complex patterns, strict colour selection or unusual plank lengths can increase waste. A well-planned repetitive room can sometimes use less. Manufacturer and installer recommendations take priority.

Why herringbone and chevron may need more material

Patterned layouts require additional cuts and more alignment work. Herringbone uses rectangular blocks arranged at right angles, while chevron elements usually meet at angled ends.

The exact loss depends on the starting line, border design, room geometry, module size and whether suitable offcuts can be reused. BOEN publishes separate installation documents for floating, glued, herringbone and chevron systems, illustrating why the product-specific method matters.

Separate reserve stock

Reserve stock is different from installation waste. It is material intentionally retained after the installation for future board replacement, repairs or extensions.

Reserve area = net area × reserve percentage

Required area = net area + waste area + reserve area

Example. For 23.24 m² of flooring, 12% waste adds 2.7888 m² and a 5% reserve adds 1.162 m². The required coverage becomes 27.1908 m².

Keep spare boards dry, flat and identified with the product name, colour, grade and production batch.

Pack rounding and purchased surplus

The calculator separates two different quantities:

  • planned allowance from waste and reserve percentages;
  • rounding surplus caused by purchasing complete packs.
Example. Sixteen packs at 1.728 m² provide 27.648 m². Compared with a requirement of 27.1908 m², pack rounding creates an additional surplus of 0.4572 m².

This surplus should not be mistaken for the selected repair reserve because it may consist of assorted offcuts or an incomplete useful set of boards.

Required planks and purchased planks

When plank dimensions are known:

Required planks = round up(required area ÷ area of one plank)

Purchased planks = whole packs × pieces per pack

Example. With 0.072 m² per plank, 27.1908 m² requires 378 planks. Sixteen packs containing 24 planks each provide 384 planks.

The count assumes every plank has the entered face dimensions. Use pack coverage instead for mixed-format products.

Estimating parquet cost

The calculator supports price per pack, price per area unit or price per piece.

  • Price per pack: whole packs × pack price;
  • Price per area: purchased coverage × price per selected area unit;
  • Price per piece: purchased planks × price per plank.

Using purchased coverage rather than net room area is important because the customer pays for complete packs and the included allowance.

Estimating underlay

Underlay is calculated separately because rolls have their own coverage and waste allowance.

Underlay rolls = round up[net area × (1 + underlay waste%) ÷ roll coverage]

Example. A net area of 23.24 m² with 5% underlay allowance requires 24.402 m². If one roll covers 15 m², two rolls are required.

Not every parquet installation uses the same underlay. Glued, nailed and floating systems have different requirements. Use only a product approved for the floor, subfloor, acoustic target and underfloor-heating system.

Estimating skirting or baseboard

Skirting is based on room perimeter rather than floor area:

Skirting pieces = round up[perimeter × (1 + waste%) ÷ piece length]

Example. A 19 m perimeter with 10% allowance requires 20.9 m of skirting. With 2.4 m pieces, nine pieces are needed.

Subtract door openings only when skirting will not cross them, and add returns, alcoves, columns or boxed services when they require trim.

Complete worked example

Consider the following project:

  • main rectangle: 5.20 m × 4.10 m;
  • additional rectangle: 1.80 m × 1.20 m;
  • excluded hearth: 0.60 m × 0.40 m;
  • herringbone waste: 12%;
  • repair reserve: 5%;
  • planks: 600 mm × 120 mm;
  • 24 planks per pack;
  • pack price: 72.50 currency units;
  • underlay: 15 m² per roll at 38 per roll;
  • skirting: 19 m perimeter, 2.4 m pieces at 9.50 each.

The result is:

  • net area: 23.24 m²;
  • required area: 27.1908 m²;
  • pack coverage: 1.728 m²;
  • packs: 16;
  • planks required: 378;
  • planks purchased: 384;
  • underlay rolls: 2;
  • skirting pieces: 9;
  • estimated material total: 1,321.50 currency units.

This total does not include adhesive, moisture barriers, profiles, thresholds, delivery, tools, subfloor preparation, installation labour, tax or disposal.

Installation conditions the calculator cannot assess

A quantity calculator cannot determine whether the floor is ready for installation. Technical checks may include:

  • subfloor moisture and room humidity;
  • subfloor flatness, cleanliness and structural strength;
  • approved installation method and adhesive;
  • expansion gaps around walls and fixed objects;
  • movement joints through doorways or large areas;
  • underfloor-heating restrictions;
  • product conditioning and package-opening instructions.

NWFA provides industry technical guidelines, while manufacturers such as Junckers and BOEN publish system-specific installation documents. Those requirements override a general material estimate.

Moisture and movement of wood flooring

Wood responds to surrounding moisture. NWFA explains that wood can gain moisture and swell in humid conditions or lose moisture and shrink in dry conditions. Incorrect site conditions can contribute to cupping, gaps or splits.

Junckers installation guidance also requires moisture and subfloor conditions to be checked for the selected system. These checks need suitable instruments and, in uncertain cases, professional assessment.

A reliable ordering workflow

  1. Draw the floor outline and label every measured section.
  2. Measure twice and record the unit beside each value.
  3. Separate added and excluded areas.
  4. Confirm the exact product and laying pattern.
  5. Use current pack coverage from the selected product.
  6. Set waste according to room complexity and installer guidance.
  7. Add repair reserve separately.
  8. Round only at the pack, roll and trim-piece stages.
  9. Confirm that enough packs from the same compatible batch are available.
  10. Review moisture, subfloor and expansion requirements before ordering ancillary products.

Common mistakes

  • measuring only the longest wall in a tapered room;
  • mixing metres and centimetres under one selected unit;
  • subtracting furniture areas that should still receive flooring;
  • using nominal plank dimensions instead of usable face dimensions;
  • confusing pack coverage with plank coverage;
  • applying one waste percentage to every layout;
  • combining installation waste and repair reserve without explaining the total;
  • rounding the area down before calculating packs;
  • pricing the net area instead of the purchased quantity;
  • forgetting thresholds, profiles, adhesive, delivery or labour;
  • ordering different batches without checking colour compatibility;
  • treating the calculator as approval of the subfloor.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra parquet should I order?

Use a waste allowance that reflects the room shape, board format and laying pattern, then add a separate reserve only when spare boards are wanted. The calculator provides planning presets, but the product instructions and installer’s cutting plan should take priority.

Why does the calculator round the number of packs up?

Flooring is normally purchased in complete packs. A fractional result therefore has to be rounded up to the next whole pack.

Should doorways, columns and fireplaces be subtracted?

Subtract only areas that will definitely remain uncovered. Do not subtract small areas under fitted furniture automatically if the installation plan requires flooring to continue beneath them.

What is the difference between waste and reserve?

Waste covers cutting, selection and installation losses. Reserve is unopened or usable material kept for future repairs, colour matching or later alterations.

Can the calculator determine whether the subfloor is ready?

No. Moisture, flatness, strength, expansion gaps, adhesive, underfloor heating and acclimation requirements must be checked against the flooring manufacturer’s instructions and relevant installation guidance.

Why can the purchased surplus be larger than the selected reserve?

The selected reserve is added before the pack calculation. A further surplus can appear because the final quantity must be rounded up to complete packs.
